Our History

In early 1982, Gail Spence decided to start a family business on the family farm just north of Georgetown, Ontario.  It all started because Gail had a hard time finding quilting supplies in the surrounding area.  With one hundred bolts of fabrics, a few notions and patterns and LOTS of determination, Gail began showing others the joy and satisfaction involved in quilting.

As the years passed, the Hobby Horse Quilt Shoppe moved to the newly renovated horse barn where the three Spence children spent many hours with their horses.  The Hobby Horse is filled to the brim with beautiful cotton fabrics, patterns, books and notions. The bottom floor contains our large classroom where classes are conducted all year round.  Classes and Demos are scheduled for all levels of quilters.  We also try to schedule classes for young sewers each session as well.

In 1996, The Hobby Horse was chosen by American Patchwork and Quilting to be included in their Quilt Sampler Special Edition. In 2011, The Hobby Horse Quilt Shoppe launched it’s new website helping customers who could not visit personally enjoy The Hobby Horse shopping experience.  New fabric lines, specialty kits and great products will be continually added.   The year 2012 marks The Hobby Horse’s 30th Anniversary. Gail, Alf  and the Hobby Horse family still share their love of quilting with all of their customers.  If you are in the area, drop by and say hello.  We always enjoy when friends come to visit.

Periodically, we will post in our Album pictures for you to enjoy.

  1. Hello,

My daughter loves horses and we are looking for a horse quilt/comforter for her bed. Do you guys sell made ones or just supplies to make?

    Thank you
